General Call Information
- Weekday calls are taken from home and run from 5:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Typical responsibilities include entering orders for new admissions, responding to overnight nursing calls, and occasionally answering after-hours questions from community physicians. Fellows may choose to complete weekday calls as either “scattered call” or “night float call,” as described below.
- Weekend calls typically include in-person coverage in the hospital during the morning and afternoon. Fellows evaluate urgent consults and patients boarding in the emergency department, with responsibilities shared with the on-call attending. After 5:00 PM, call continues from home and is similar in scope to weekday home call. A post-call day is provided after Sunday calls.
- General call distribution: With 16 fellows sharing coverage, fellows would generally average approximately 13 weekday Monday–Thursday home calls, 3–4 Friday calls, 3–4 Saturday calls, 3–4 Sunday calls and 1 holiday call per academic year. These estimates may vary based on holidays, vacations, scheduling needs, and differences in call responsibilities by year of training.
Types of Call
- Night float: During night float, fellows are on call from 5 pm at night to 8 am the next day and then start the next call at 5 pm on that day. Fellows don’t need to go to their usual rotations during night float weeks and their only daily duty involves call from home at night.
- Scattered single night calls: On a single night call, fellows work their normal day shift and are then on-call from 5 pm to 8 am the next day. They have the rest of the day off as their post call day.
- Hybrid system: mix of night float and scattered calls.
